Luther's publication of the 95 Theses in 1517 brought about many changes to worship, perhaps none more significant than the singing of chorales by the congregation. These stout, singable melodies and the theologically rich texts they were sung to provided inspiration to generations of composers who pioneered new ways to musically express the tunes and texts. This concert presented some of the great works made possible by the Reformation chorales, from Johann Sebastian Bach to Liszt, Reger and Karg-Elert, titans of the German Romantic period. Joy Leilani Garbutt is Director of Music at Christ Lutheran Church in Washington, DC. Mark Willey is Artistic Director of the Evensong Concert Series and Director of Music at Spencerville Adventist Church and Georgetown Presbyterian Church.
